Ordinarily Available Provision
At Franciscan Primary School, we are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive environment for every child.
“Ordinarily Available Provision” refers to the level of support and inclusive practices that all mainstream schools and early years settings are expected to provide for every pupil, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), using their own resources and funding.
This sets a baseline of consistent, high-quality teaching and reasonable adjustments. It encourages all schools and settings to reflect on and strengthen their inclusive practices so that every learner can thrive. Parents can also use their local SEND Local Offer to understand what their child should receive and to work in partnership with their child’s school.
Key Aspects of Ordinarily Available Provision
- Inclusive Practice: Fostering environments where children with SEND can attend their local setting or school without needing additional specialist provision.
- Consistency: Ensuring a clear, consistent approach across schools and settings within the local authority so parents know what to expect.
- Resource-Based: Delivered through the school’s own resources and funding, not dependent on additional funding for specialist interventions.
- High-Quality Teaching: Centred on excellent classroom teaching, adapted through differentiation and reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of all pupils.
- Parental Partnership: Recognising the vital role of parents and carers in working alongside the school to identify barriers, adjust support, and celebrate progress.
What This Means for Parents
- Understanding Support: Provides clarity about the minimum level of support your child should receive in a mainstream school, even without an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
- Using the Local Offer: Your local council’s SEND Local Offer explains in detail the expectations for schools in your area.
- Advocating for Your Child: Parents can use this guidance to discuss their child’s needs with the school and ensure inclusive practices are in place.
- Supporting at Home: The guidance often includes practical strategies and interventions that families can use to complement school support.
